Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my child could benefit from occupational therapy?

Every child develops at their own pace, but you may notice your child is finding some everyday activities more challenging than expected. They might have difficulty with emotional regulation, sensory processing, fine or gross motor skills, handwriting, attention, self care, coordination, or making and maintaining friendships. If you're unsure whether occupational therapy is the right fit, I'm always happy to have a chat and answer any questions. Sometimes all it takes is an initial assessment to better understand your child's strengths and identify areas where support may be beneficial.

What ages do you work with?

Little Octopus Therapy supports children and young people from the early years through to high school. Therapy is always tailored to your child's age, stage of development, and individual goals. Whether your child is learning foundational skills before starting school, building confidence throughout primary school, or navigating the increasing demands of high school, I provide practical, evidence based support that meets them where they are. My goal is to help every child develop the confidence and skills they need to participate successfully at home, at school, and in the community.

Where do sessions take place?

Little Octopus Therapy is a mobile service, which means I come to the location that best suits your family. Sessions can take place at home, school, daycare, in the community, or via telehealth when appropriate. Working in your child's everyday environments allows therapy to be practical, meaningful, and easily carried over into daily life.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is all about getting to know your child and your family. I'll spend time building rapport through fun, engaging activities while learning about your child's strengths, interests, and any areas they're finding challenging. We'll also discuss your goals and what you'd like your child to achieve through therapy. This information helps me develop an individualised therapy plan that is meaningful, enjoyable, and centred around your child's needs.

Will therapy just feel like playing?

Yes, and that's exactly how children learn best! While sessions often look like games, obstacle courses, crafts, or imaginative play, every activity has a purpose. Each session is carefully planned to target your child's goals while keeping them engaged, motivated, and having fun. When children enjoy therapy, they're more likely to participate, practise new skills, and build confidence.

Can I be involved in sessions?

Absolutely. Parents and carers are an important part of the therapy journey. I believe the best outcomes happen when we work together, so you're always encouraged to be involved in sessions where appropriate. I'll also provide practical strategies, ideas, and activities that can be easily incorporated into your family's everyday routines, helping your child continue building skills outside of therapy.

How often will my child need therapy?

Every child is different, so the frequency of therapy depends on their individual goals, strengths, and support needs. Some children benefit from weekly sessions, while others may attend fortnightly or monthly. Together, we'll determine a therapy schedule that is realistic for your family and provides the best opportunity for your child to make meaningful progress.
